Warn the Family

A new dog is a lot of responsibility and your family will have to be prepared to work together to make sure Fido is happy and healthy. It’s important that everyone is aware of what their new responsibilities will be. The dog will need to be walked, fed, cleaned up after, as well as played with and loved on a regular basis. You need to make sure that all members of the family are on board and prepared for the arrival of the new pup.

Buy EVERYTHING

Buying everything you need for your new fur-baby is the fun part, but it can be expensive, so be sure that you are prepared to spend a pretty penny. In order to make sure that you get everything you need, make a list. You wouldn’t want to come home only to realize you forgot to buy dog food or a leash.

You will need to buy the essentials like food, bowls, a collar and leash, and a bed, but don’t forget to throw in a couple (or 10) toys to make Fido feel welcome in his or her new home.

Puppy-Proof the House

Just as you would for a new baby, it’s important to puppy-proof your home to ensure that anything that could be potentially dangerous to your pup is tucked away in a safe place. A good idea is to think like a puppy. What items look yummy to chew on? What places look fun to explore? Be sure to place any chemicals on a high shelf, tape cords to baseboards, and pick up any small items that your pup could easily choke on.

If you’re having trouble with a dog who likes to chew, check out ACDT! We offer puppy obedience training that can curb all your dog’s annoying little habits. We offer a variety of classes including basic dog obedience classes. What are you waiting for? Sign up today!

Find a Vet

If you already have a dog, chances are that you already have a vet, however, if this is your first fur ball, it’s a good idea to find a vet before your dog comes home. It’s important to do your research when it comes to finding a vet. Shop around and read reviews from other pet owners, or if you have friends who have dogs, ask them about their vets. What do they like? What don’t they like? You will probably want to take your pup in for a checkup about a week after you bring him or her home, so it’s good to know beforehand what vet you will choose.

Dog Obedience

Once your dog is home and well-adjusted, you will want to sign him or her up for dog obedience classes. ACDT is your go-to place for dog obedience. Our staff are helpful, attentive, and more than happy to help you and your pup through the dog training process. After you’ve checked out our list of classes, contact us at ACTD to sign up!
