With the weather finally warming up and summer on the horizon, many people are choosing to spend their free time enjoying the outdoors. That being said, while you’re out enjoying the sun, there’s no reason why you should have to leave your four-legged friend behind. There are numerous activities that both you and your dog can enjoy this summer, and in today’s post, we will give you a list of ways that you can get outside with your favorite furball!

If you plan on spending a lot of time with your dog this summer, it’s a good idea to make sure that he or she has the proper training to behave while you are in public. Common commands like “sit,” “stay,” and “leave it” may come in handy while you are out and about. If you find that teaching your dog these commands is more difficult than you thought, ACDT can help! We offer basic dog training and puppy training classes, as well as more advanced obedience training. Have a Doggy Pool Party!

There’s no question that the worst part of the summer is the heat. Instead of staying inside to ride out the warmer weather, one creative way to stay cool on hot days is to have a doggy pool party! All you have to do is buy a kiddie pool, place it in your backyard, and fill it up with water. Your dog will love being able to cool off in the water, especially if you throw in some of his or her favorite toys. If you really want to make it a party, you can invite some of your friends and their dogs. Let the dogs run around in the pool or a sprinkler while the humans enjoy a nice BBQ or a cool drink.

Take Your Dog Camping

Camping is a summertime favorite. There’s nothing like waking up in the great outdoors, hiking, and cooking your meals over a fire, but the best part about camping is that it is a very dog-friendly activity! Many campgrounds allow you to bring your dog with you as long as they are well-behaved. If you’re thinking about going camping for the weekend, why not bring your dogs? They will have a great time exploring new areas and smelling new smells. Not to mention, it will be a great opportunity to get them out of the house for a few days.

Enjoy a Meal Downtown

Areas that have a large dog population typically have a lot of dog-friendly establishments. Take your dog for a walk around town and if you get tired, stop by a restaurant that has a patio area and allows dogs. You can sit on the patio with a book or just watch the people pass while your dog rests. It may not seem like the most active way to spend your time, but it will definitely be enjoyable.

Go to a Drive-In Movie

Watching a movie with your favorite fur ball is the perfect way to relax after a long day, and if you’re already planning on settling down with a movie for the night, why not make it extra special? The next time you decide to rent or go see a movie, take your dog with you to a drive-in theater! Going to the drive-in combines the excitement of seeing a movie in theaters with the comfort of snuggling up with your favorite pup.

These are just a few suggestions of ways that you can spend time with your dog this summer. That being said, any fun activity can be ruined by a dog with bad manners, so if you need help training your dog to be a well-behaved member of the family, ACDT can help! We proudly offer a variety of dog obedience training to those living in Medford and the surrounding areas. To learn more or to sign up for one of our classes, contact ACDT today!
